Response to Kelsey Corey's post "Mart"

Thanks for going and sharing your experiences. It was cool to hear about how your idea of high schoolers participating in art projects was shifted when you saw the 9th grader come out and participate. I think that because we haven't seen as many community art projects like this, we don' t know how people will react and how much they will take ownership of it.

I was even thinking about how the arts could be used in teaching students about respect for themselves and their peers in reducing bullying in middle and high schools. This could be anything from aesthetic arts to drama or dance. I am increasingly more aware of how art is so powerful in effecting change because it touches our souls. As humans I think that there's more to social change than just telling people about the facts of injustice. There's an experiential part of it because we're more than just our brain. What does it take for information to get from our heads to our hearts? I've heard it said that that's one of the longest journeys we take and art needs to be involved with this.
